President Trump calls for warships to protect oil tankers, South Korea “closely monitoring”

Since February 2026, Iran has become a threat following President Donald Trump and Isreal government declaring war with surprise airstrikes on various locales in Iran. In its wake, Trump and co have declared the US Navy to be accompanying oil tankers to ensure safety through the Strait of Hormuz, calling on other countries to do the same, naming both South Korea and Japan.

Japan expressed intent, but South Korea was hesitant to follow the word of Trump. In a statement to AFP, shared by Straits Times, Seoul is considering various measures.

“We are closely monitoring President Trump’s remarks on social media and will carefully consider the matter in close consultation with the United States […] comprehensively considering and exploring various measures… to ensure the safety of energy transport routes.”

South Korea relies heavily on energy imports, so regardless of current feelings towards the government leading the protection, it’s in their best interest to ensure imports go smoothly, even if that means potentially sending off warships.
